What is it?
Each year, Walk for Rice raises money for the ACRS Food Bank. This walk and fun run, held at Seward Park, brings together more than 1,000 community members who are united to fight hunger. Participants can choose to run or walk the 2.5-mile trail while raising money and awareness about hunger in King County.
When and where is it?
The 19th Annual Walk for Rice will be held at Seattle’s Seward Park (5902 Lake Washington Blvd S) on Saturday, June 20, 2009. Registration will open at 8am, and the event should conclude no later than 1pm. See below for a more detailed schedule.
PARKING IS NOT AVAILABLE AT THE EVENT. Please make arrangements to carpool or use public transportation. Metro Route 39 regularly serves the Seward Park area. Please visit Metro Triplanner for more information and direct routes from your location.
Additionally, ACRS will be offering a special shuttle service from our building (3639 MLK Way S) to Walk for Rice. Simply park (free of charge!) in our lot and catch the shuttle bus to Seward Park. Shuttle service will begin at 8am and continue service every 20-30 minutes until 2pm.
Who participates?
As ACRS’ signature community event, Walk for Rice attracts a diverse number of participants. Our attendees include families, church groups, sororities/fraternities, professional associations, and more. We have been especially proud to include many corporate and community organizations like Boeing, Microsoft and the University of Washington. Additionally, Walk for Rice had benefited from the consistent support of our local politicians and elected officials, including Governor Christine Gregoire, King County Executive Ron Sims and State Representative Bob Hasegawa.
Why is participating in Walk for Rice important?
The ACRS Food Bank has 7,500 visits from low-income Asian Pacific American households each month. The food bank, located in Seattle’s International District, provides a central location for people to access appropriate staples such as rice, tofu, ramen, fish and fresh produce. It is the only food bank in Washington State to regularly provide staples of the Asian Pacific American diet and is the second most-used food bank in King County.
